Merv Symes is Vice President, Organization Change for J.D. Irving, Limited. J.D. Irving is a diverse family owned business, headquartered in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. The company has over 130 years of experience in successfully serving customers throughout the world.
Since reading “In Search of Excellence” and “Out of Crisis” in 1982, his primary interest in all his positions has been in learning and applying best management practices as a change agent. In 1989 he joined J.D. Irving Limited starting out at Irving Pulp and Paper Limited. In 1994 he moved to Irving Paper Mill as the Human Resources/Quality Manager. In 1998 he was promoted to Director, Organizational Development for J.D. Irving Limited. While in the role he had the opportunity to learn the latest best management practices: GE leading Change process (CAP), competency based leadership development, Balanced Scorecard, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc. and lead their integration into the New Irving Way. In March 2003 Merv assumed the role of Director, Productivity Improvement for J.D. Irving Limited. In the role Merv functioned as an internal consultant, leading division transformations. In 2006 Merv was promoted to Vice President, Organizational Change to facilitate the implementation of a common formal management system across the enterprise. Merv has over 25 years of experience at leading organization improvement interventions.
Prior to joining J.D. Irving, Merv had worked for Procter and Gamble, Boise Cascade, and Domtar in Pulp and Paper operation roles. Merv graduated in 1981 from the University of New Brunswick with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He has received extensive leadership development in process improvement (Black Belt from University of Tennessee and a transactional Green Belt from Juran), Balance Scorecard (Balance Scorecard Collaborative), and leadership competencies (Richard Ivey School of Business).
